The comic series “Yakari“ clearly differentiates between child-like and childish. The Indian boy Yakari plays with animals. He can even talk to them. But these animals act like real wild animals do. In the course of many adventures Yakari learns to treat the animals (meaning nature) carefully in order that they will react positively to him. That is suitable for children or child-like. Yakari was created by the Swiss artist Derib (Claude de Ribeaupierre). Yakari was first published in 1970 and with this series, Derib finally turned to the genre in which he can tell realistic stories as no other artist can. Together with the scenarist Job (André Jobin) he began the cycle with the episode in which the little Sioux boy meets the eagle which is his totem animal. These albums do not surprise the reader with hectic action scenes. They patiently observe how friendships are made, problems are solved together and dangerous situations are overcome. The Erlangen International Comic Salon presents the children’s comic “Yakari” in an exhibition that is very suitable for children in cooperation with Salleck Publications and the children’s channel KiKa. But the grown-up fans of “Yakari” will also delight in the original pages drawn by Derib.
